Wow! Blood Sugar level of over 400!  I could not believe what I was hearing.  One of my sisters has not been feeling very good, not really bad but not good. She was fatigued, had headaches, was not sleeping well – then she became dry mouthed and thirsty all the time.  After much persuasion she finally tested her blood glucose level and it was above 400.  She tried to ignore it, went on with her day and waited until afternoon until she told us.  We urged her to call her physician and they told her to get to urgent care.  There her blood glucose was still over 200.  They gave her some medicine to help bring it down and the physician told her that she needs to gain muscle mass, lose fat and exercise more regularly.  She also needed to reevaluate her diet.  Now, my sister strength trains 3 times a week, walks 2 or more miles 2 to 3 times a week, and has removed sugar out of her diet.  She is now loosing weight, gaining strength, has more energy and seems to be happier.  All it took was a scare.  Why do we wait to be scared?

Who is to Blame? October 20, 2007

Who is to blame for me being overweight?  Well I could blame all the diets I have tried – Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Low Carb, No Carb, Low Fat, No Fat, the Soup Diet, The Smoothie Diet, Curves Diet, Let’s just not eat diet, the (you fill in the name) diet – they did not work.  OK, some might have worked for a short time, but over time they did the opposite, instead of losing weight I gained more weight back.  I would like to blame the diets for the failure because it is hard to say “I FAILED THE DIET” or in some cases “That was a stupid diet to try” – it is easier to say the diet failed and that no responsibility falls on me.

Now in the progression of the diet game I have figured out many things that trigger my unhealthy eating choices.  But, in knowing them I am now responsible for my reactions to the situations.  I have to admit, not knowing was easier, that way I could blame my past or present and pretend that I have nothing to do with the results, an unhealthy body.  Too many time I got stuck in the blame game without taking responsibility – now I have to pay the price and work harder to get healthy.  Taking responsibility is the key – No More Excuses!  There are no quick fixes only better choices.

Moderation The Answer We All Know October 20, 2007

Why is the diet industry a billion dollar business when we all know the answer?   The answer -  eat everything in moderation, eat fresh healthy foods and exercise.  Why then do we make it so difficult?  The answer to this one is a little more complicated and you can find 100’s of books that try to explain why and how.  So, with all this knowledge, why is the diet industry a billion dollar business?   Why, because we all want excuses and something or someone to blame.  (I say “we” because I am on this journey with you.)

The challenge:

  1.  Take full responsibility for what we have become.
  2. Admit that we really know the answers and eat in moderation.
  3. Eat fresh healthy foods.
  4. Exercise – at least 3 times a week but 5 or more would be better.  Begin by walking and work up to strength building.
  5. No excuses! Just do it.  If you slip up take responsibility, make no excuses and get back to living healthier.
